Read full description of the books Praying for Boys: Asking God for the Things They Need Most:This book was not what I expected…..a nice little book on praying for boys. It was so much more. The author has a real vision for boys. “I asked God to give me boys. Even before I was married I knew I wanted to raise men who would be different–respecters of women, lovers of God. Men who would work with their hands, take commitments seriously, and protect the least of these. Men who were warriors, protectors, worshipers, peacemakers, and friends” (location 37). She fleshes out her vision throughout the book and candidly admits that she has no idea how to get boys from where they’re at now to fulfilling their calling as godly men…..on her own.
She states that the “best way a mom can enter the war for the heart of her son is on her knees” (location 78). Parents who pray for their kids recognize that they can’t do it. We can’t change our kids’ hearts….but in prayer we put our “faith and hope in the God who can” (location 90). That’s the emphasis of this book.
I was convicted as I read this book over how generic my prayers have been for my son. Yes, I pray for specific character issues but often my prayers look more like, “Make him a godly man.”
This book has 21 different things to focus on as you pray for your boys. Each section has some thoughts and insight on the topic. The author gave real life examples and explains why this is so important for boys as they grow into manhood. Each section ends with scripture verses with a blank where you would insert your son’s name as you pray for your son in this area (i.e., obedience).
The information in each section was very sound and biblical. I was excited that she had so many verses listed in each area. This will save me (and you?) so much work and effort. It’s nice to be able to get started right away when you catch a vision for something like this. My only wish is that there would be a pdf file for those who buy the book that would allow you to print the verses in various formats as I might not want to have to open up my kindle copy every time I want to use the list. There is a website with a resources tab but so far this is not on there.
I would highly recommend this book for moms and dads or anyone who has a special boy in their life. It was so helpful and hopeful. I felt my own vision for my son grow and grow as I read this book. It is so easy to get caught up in every day life and not be intentional in preparing our sons. It was also helpful to be reminded that prayer is SO IMPORTANT!!! God loves our sons even more than we do. If they are believers, God has promised that He will be at work in them, moment by moment, making them more like His son, Jesus. So we can have great hope as we pray for them. If our sons are not yet believers, we have all the more reason to be praying for God to change their hearts of stone to hearts of flesh.
Thank you Bethany House and NetGalley for proving me with a free copy of this book for the purpose of this review. I will use this book for many years to come hopefully as I raise my son.
