Read full description of the books Gone Daddy Gone - A Black Knight Short Story:I read this because it was included in the Headshot eBook (a YA) to expose readers to another of Mr. Hartness' series.
A prequel to the Black Knight Chronicles, we see Jimmy Black and Gregory Knightwood III outside their home. In fact we never actually get to their home or their incredible friendship and banter, and I think that brings the story down a bit. The bro-mance between these two is what truly makes the Black Knight Chronicles so entertaining and in this story the relationship comes across as much more adversarial, with Jimmy Black scary with how easily he kills. From this short story you would think Black is just one decision away from being a Bad Fang and he has already made that decision, but hasn't acted on it because of Knightwood.
The story itself, a new widow hiring them to protect her from her newly dead and reanimated husband, follows a predictable path. Not a bad introduction to the Black Knight team, but not the best. I recommend going directly to reading the Black Knight stories. This short story adds nothing to the canon and is not as amusing as the rest of the series.
On the other hand it isn't bad and if you have 15 minutes to fill, every story from Mr. Hartness has some funny moments.
Read information about the authorJohn Hartness is a recovering theatre geek and award-winning poet from Charlotte, NC. He is the author of The Black Knight Chronicles urban fantasy series, featuring snarky, non-sparkly vampires with bad attitudes and comic book collections to rival Stan Lee's!
A graduate of Winthrop University, John has spent twenty years in some form of theatre, from performing and directing to designing and producing. He's played roles such as Petruchio in Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew and directed classical (Hamlet) and contemporary (Corpus Christi) classics alike.
John lives in Charlotte, NC with his wife, Suzy, their two cats and a sweet but rather dim-witted dog named Leko.
