Read full description of the books On Foot Across France: Dunkirk to the Pyrenees:I have been involved with France all my life. I spent the 1980s and '90s working on The Rough Guide to France, but had always thought of writing my own book about France, nothing to do with cathedrals and history and railway timetables: a more personal look at the country I loved. I wanted to make a slow journey, a journey on foot. I kept thinking of Laurence Sterne’s eighteenth-century A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy, but could not decide on a route, until one day in 2000 I came upon an article in the French newspaper, Le Monde, by its culture correspondent who had crossed the country on foot from the North Sea at Dunkirk to the Spanish border close to the Mediterranean end of the Pyrenees mountains. He followed the line of the old Paris meridian, which, re-christened La Méridienne Verte, served as a central focus for France’s millennium celebrations.
That’s it, I thought: there’s my route, a virtual line from nowhere in particular to nowhere in particular, passing, with the exception of Paris, through nowhere in particular. It would bring what it brought. I would see what I saw.
This book is the diary of that walk, the story day by day of what I saw, heard, thought: landscapes, flower girls, snippets of history, curious encounters and lots of birdsong.
Read information about the authorI grew up in the countryside in England, was educated as a classicist at Oxford University and set off to spend the rest of my life as a bohemian wanderer in the eastern Mediterranean. But we know what happens to the best laid plans... Marriage, children: I ended up teaching, in Greece, Libya, then in London, for the first twenty years of my adult existence. And then I began writing: mostly about travel, mostly about Greece and France; guidebooks, travel journalism, accounts of journeys. My interest has remained the world I originally discovered as a classicist, the countries where Greek and Latin once were spoken, in particular the mountainous bits. I have done translations from and into French and Greek and I have a special interest in schizophrenia because of my own son's plight.
