Read full description of the books Candide: Scottish Opera Version Vocal Score:CANDIDE. (1956). Lillian Hellman, Leonard Bernstein, & Richard Wilbur. ****.
I was lucky enough to see the original Broadway production of this musical written by Hellman, with music by Bernstein, and lyrics by Wilbur. I was in high school at the time and worked on the weekends accompanying bus trips from Philly to New York of groups of theater goers. We’d leave early Saturday morning and return on Sunday evening. In between, the group took in two matinees of Broadway musicals. It didn’t take me long to tire of the then popular shows – after the fourth or fifth time I’d had enough – when I managed to get a free ticket to Candide. I was bowled over. The performances of Max Anderson as Dr. Pangloss and Barbara Cook as Cunnegonde were stellar. I still play the original cast album frequently. Oh…the play, based on Voltaire’s work, was excellent – full of wit and irony. Reading a musical, however, is difficult, unless you can sing along with the lyrics as you encounter them. Fortunately, I could. If you haven’t seen this show, I’d recommend you pick up a copy of the soundtrack and play it when you reach the various songs. Hopefully, you fill find the experience as good as I did almost sixty years ago. Recommended.
